Inclusive Teaching Program
In 2018, the Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE) was tasked with developing an integrated suite of programming to expand the awareness and application of inclusive teaching strategies by educators at NC. The CAE embarked on a broad consultation process that engaged over 170 faculty, staff, administrators, and students in conversations about program needs and development. The result is the Inclusive Teaching Program – a two-tiered inclusive teaching development program.
All participants must start with Inclusive Teaching Foundations before proceeding to later courses that guide participants through specialized topics including inclusive course and curriculum design, inclusive learning environments, and intercultural learning.
Through completion of the Inclusive Teaching Program, educators should be able to:
- Identify aspects of inclusive teaching and explain the significance of them at NC
- Critically examine your teaching practice from an inclusive lens
- Apply inclusive teaching practices to your teaching and learning contexts
Inclusive Teaching Foundations
Inclusive Teaching Foundations is an 8-hour classroom session facilitated by the Centre for Academic Excellence. This participative session serves as a foundational introduction to inclusive teaching concepts and practices and will include opportunities to:
- Begin to interrogate assumptions and expectations within your teaching practice
- Build awareness of student diversity and how diverse student experiences impact teaching & learning
- Develop familiarity with common terminology of inclusive teaching
- Understand and apply basic UDL principles to analyze course documents and materials
- Identify strategies for building empathy with and among students
