Description:

This activity provides an opportunity for educators to interrogate the assumptions we hold about who our students are in relation to their social identities and diverse lived experiences. While we often can acknowledge that diversity exists within and across individuals, our systems of higher education are largely designed to teach ‘one kind of learner.’ Because of this context, diversity is often minimized and replaced by certain assumptions inherent within our educational systems. These assumptions impact the pedagogical choices that we make ranging from classroom expectations and norms to assessments and beyond.

Using the assumptions checklist:

  • Reflect on the potential assumptions that you may hold as an educator
  • Identify assumptions that manifest themselves within your teaching

Questions for consideration: What kind of assumptions are inherent in my teaching? Are there changes I can make in my teaching to address these assumptions?
